On our Community Walk yesterday, we walked to Reader Rock Garden. (Sophia) We did the Layered Listening activity again. Our volunteer put on a timer for 30 seconds and we had to write down what we heard for 30 sec, and then we did it for 1 minute, and then 5 minutes. Then, we did a nature sketch. (Priya)

"I was also annoyed by all of the car noises. I really tried hard during the 5 minutes to listen to the nature but I kept hearing the train bells. I felt really bad for the animals. I bet for the wild animals like coyotes, their prey would be leaving, making it hard for them to hunt." ~ Charlotte
"In five minutes, people kept laughing. I heard yawning. I heard a lot of noises which was annoying." ~ James
"I learned that noise pollution affects a lot of things. It reminded me of the Telus Spark dome show last year when we learned about a bunch of frogs that was in a small pond and how a year later, there wasn't a lot of frog noises in the pond because a new highway was built and there were almost no frogs left." ~ Abby
"I feel really badly for the animals because they have to listen to the car noises and train noises all day." ~ D

"We saw this plant that was a hitch-hiker. It had tiny hooks on it so it would stick to you, as you can see in the picture." ~ Sophia
"At my old school, there was a Grade 2 class that did a nature walk but one of the animals was scared of them because of how much noise they were making." ~ Bianca
"The burrs that stuck to my pants, when you take them off, the hooks fall off and dig into my pants which makes it uncomfortable to walk around in." ~ Jaxton
"When I was at the Reader Rock Garden, I heard a bunch of people walk by talking. I thought it was disrespectful because it's supposed to be a safe place for animals and people. I heard lots of trains and cars and it didn't feel like a safe place for animals to be." ~ Jasper

This is a sage plant. We saw a woman from the restaurant come out and pick some to put on people's plates because they are edible. |
